Live from Boston with the Smashing Pumpkins

Tonight, barring technical difficulty, HU will have live reports from the Orpheum in Boston where the Pumpkins are opening a three-night stand. Jill is on the scene and armed with a BlackBerry. We should even have pictures!

8:22pm
“Gio (the new Gooch) [ed. technically, I think Gio is the new Earl, right?] says they go on in twenty. He’s looking very Alternative Nation…”

8:34pm The setlist will be kept current on SPFC.

8:48pm They are on stage, opening with Rocket (picture #1, 300KB) (picture #2, 250KB)

8:53pm Jill, who normally takes a bathroom break during Bullet with Butterfly Wings, won’t do so tonight as it is “too early”.

9:02pm Drown follows. (picture #3, 180KB)

9:07pm “That’s [Bring the Light] my fave new song,” Jill enthuses. “Now [playing] United States.”

9:12pm “Revolution, biatch.” (picture #4, 200KB)

9:19pm “Hey!” (picture #5, 470KB)

9:24pm “‘When I was born’ is the first lyric of that last song [Pomp and Circumstances]…song titles not my forte. Now Tonight, Tonight.”

9:31pm “Tarantula. Audience approves.” (picture #6, 300KB)

9:35pm “BC and JC did go to the Red Sox game last night. Made fun of the Patriots coach by saying they saw him in the stands videotaping. LOL. Stand Inside Your Love ensues.” (picture #7, 360KB)

9:44pm “Zero, then Glass, I think. B0lly caught me texting. For sure, Glass…wankyyyyy. It’s weird, he’z close. Finally the real song starts four minutes in.” Hahaha…

9:55pm Next is 1979, performed on acoustic guitar by “the one wearing the iridescent blue jumpsuit.”

10:00pm “Hmmm…music stand out on stage and here comes JC…on tambourine for an acoustic Perfect.”

10:06pm The BlackBerry is dead; long live the cell phone. “Stupid battery. Set the Ray to Jerry. Wow.”

10:09pm “I think this is Superchrist.”

10:17pm “Dear Ginger is displaying what seems to be a personality, as some psychologists would say. She’s Rocking Out. Heavy Metal Machine now.”

10:27pm Did you omit Doomsday Clock, Jill? “No, I sent that earlier. Maybe lost in transit?”

10:31pm “‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ singalong.”

10:36pm “Encore begins with a jammy intro to Ava Adore.”

10:41pm “Hipsters unite! It’s Cherub Rock!”

10:45pm Phone rings. “Show’s over. They’re so glam now, it’s ridiculous! Jeff was not having any of it tonight, though; I think he was wearing his Sunday football clothes…”

That brings our triple-communication-technology live-blogging event to an end.

Still think I’d rather be at Fenway tonight…

    Nice Jill.

So, was Rocket played acoustic or electric? I’m also glad I’m not the only one who
thought Ginger was a robot :x

  5. spazeboy Says:

Rocket was electric. Only 1979 and Perfect were acoustic.

I didn’t know that HU was going to be at the show last night! I’m almost as big a fan of this blog as I am of SP, and would have loved the chance to say so in person. Oh well, keep up the great work.

Very nice! will we have 2 more shows like this? and was jill using the blackbery pearl :)

Aww, shucks. Not sure what I’d do at a show if someone recognized me from the blog. Laugh a lot, I suppose. It was actually a great show — and I know this sounds like sacrilege, but it was pretty enjoyable that it was shorter. I am getting too pathetic to handle the 3-hour rockfests. I was down in the fifth row on Ginger’s side thanks to a great guy at taperssection.com. Zach taped from the orchestra straight back from the left stacks.

As I type this, we are listening to the show. It’s UNBELIEVABLE. These Schoeps are really pulling through for us this year. :) I thought Frank’s Indy show sounded phenomenal — this is right up there with it, if not better. :) The sound at the Orpheum was GREAT! Thankfully though, Zach is vacuuming the apartment while BWBW is on. Though, to you all that know how much I hate that song, it was actually quite tolerable last night as it was very true to the album version. No extended wankery, no “seven versions of hell.”

And, I’m not sure what kind of BlackBerry this is, Monte. It’s brand new - salesforce.com gave it to me when I was at a conference in San Francisco a month ago. I also won a $4000 grand prize trip to Hawaii while I was out there, so let’s hope TSP shows up in Honolulu. *grin*

    Other thoughts:
    – This setlist was great. Solid, to the point, a couple of nice surprises. I adore Bring the Light and can’t tell you what a treat it was. Glass was really amazing (though I used to despise that song). Drown is always a pleasure, and Superchrist is a Jimmy showcase that’s shorter and more rocking than Gossamer, but without the Uli Jon Roth goodness. *grin*
    – It was a bit of a surprise to me that I got to go to Boston too, so the HU appearance was last-minute. But rest assured, JJB and I will both be at three of the Philly shows, so if anyone would like to have a blog meet-up, let me know and I’ll probably laugh for about three days straight. And then figure out what bar to go to.
    – I will now fast-forward to Bring the Light on this recording.
