Bloggers at the gate
August 23rd, 2008 by jjbtags: tour, amusing, criticism
Not surprisingly, the populist, under-edited up-and-comers at Consequence of Sound are the first general-interest music bloggers I’ve seen to post a review of a show on the Smashing Pumpkins’ August tour; also not surprisingly, they were into it. The header on Andrew Gerlach’s writeup declares the band “alive and strong in Boca Raton”, and he declares “your ears” to be alive and, uh, messed up:
The band ripped through a sick, never-ending version of “Heavy Metal Machine” that left your ears bleeding yet sadisticly [sic] asking for more.

HAHA. Do I have permission to use the above description in our business brochures?

:) Of course.

Thanks for the comments. Always love the feedback. Don’t mind the extra hits on the site as well.
Cheers,
Drew

Hey Alex/Drew — You guys should do a “on 2nd listen” review of Zeitgeist. :-)

I think they already have enough credibility at risk, Davin ;)

Apologize for the mishap, but an entire post devoted to it? Unnecessary. Then again, an entire blog based on the SP is unnecessary, as well.

Mike, the “entire” post isn’t about a typo or about a silly anthropomorphism — there are plenty of compliments for CoS in there, as well as two links that comprise the main service the post performs for our readers.
The point of the criticism — remember I called the site “under-edited”, not just this one article — is that while I like where CoS is positioned ideologically, its major competitors (Pitchfork, Stereogum, Idolator, Brooklyn Vegan, etc.) are generally superior on writing quality (and by that I don’t just mean spellchecking). If CoS is serious about moving to the top and gaining influence, that’s something that you all will be needing to address now that you are off the ground. Congratulations on getting this far and I hope you can go further.
As for HU, are we necessary? No, we’re just having fun; not a business brochure to be seen. Somehow though, we have 1/4th as many readers as CoS…

Wow, a jokey complimentary post about CoS spawns an insult about our blog’s very validity. Guess it doesn’t matter that their Founder/Publisher thought it was funny or that we link to them in the sidebar. (Hello, that means We <3 You.)
Sure, we’re not necessary, but we have fun writing. Is another music blog necessary? Another news blog? No. Sheesh, can’t we all get along?

Mark — you disappoint me. Of course SP deserves there own blog!!! Did you read Drew’s comments about the show?!?!?!
“Many people, including myself, doubted the relevancy of the Pumpkins once D’Arcy and James Iha left the band. Acquaintances had to convince me fervently that this show would be worth my time. I easily stand corrected and am proud to say that if you give them a chance, the Smashing Pumpkins are a highly talented group that can still easily kick most current bands collective ass.”
:banging: ;-)
