“Smashing Pumpkins show off their powerful new sound”

details the recent gig at The Venue in Hammond, Indiana.  He takes the first half of the article to express the played-out confusion of the band’s choice of.. erm.. the venue.  However, buried in the latter half of the article is what *looks* like praise:

Despite a back-to-back delivery of his band’s signature hits (”Today,” “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”) that were rushed through like obligations, the new-period Pumpkins were not grounded in the dark, personal obsessions of its leader but instead found urgency in a meat-and-potatoes meal of distortion, drones, lengthy guitar explorations and songs that started in one place and then sprayed into several different directions. Featuring founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the new lineup—now a quintet including three new members—played with more brawn and musical vitality than the original incarnation ever did.

At least I think that’s praise.  Praise by blame for $100, Alex?

Side note: Check out all the negative comments already on the article. Not many happy campers. Interesting to see people stumbling upon this article though, without actually having to search for it like I did. I guess it is the Trib.

Wow. I’m actually shocked people who seem to be really into the band didn’t enjoy the show. After listening to the bootlegs though (or parts of them), I’ve gotta say that G.L.O.W. sounds like another boring, flat and unevolved zeigeist-esque tune. Although the recorded version could be much different…and the bass part on it’s own does kind of kick ass - the scrappy twang ala Gish era bass makes a return!

@jillysp: When you read some of those comments, specifically the one about the guy who drove a long way just to hear Disarm and wants his money back, you really get the sense that it’s a lose-lose situation for the band. I guess having a huge back catalog cuts both ways…

anybody who complains about netphoria being a cesspool just needs to spend five minutes in the tribune’s comments section.

Man, those comments were nasty. Everyone I’ve come across online seems to have enjoyed the show. A lot of it reeked of bitterness though.
