The Smashing Pumpkins in Charlottesville, in pictures

Tom Daly of the cvilleMUSE blog has them, along with his sometimes-inaccurate commentary on the show:

SP’s new tunes, the majority from their latest album Zeitgeist, seemed fairly similar to the classic Pumpkins style.

There were only two songs from Zeitgeist, with another four being post-Zeitgeist songs…and really, if you don’t already know whether the band’s “new tunes” are similar to the old, why would you think you knew which ones were on the album?

Contrast that approach to journalism with that of the very self-aware Hank Altogether, who attended the Louisville show and knows what he doesn’t know:

Not only did I have a difficult time knowing what songs they were playing, it was hard to tell when songs began or ended. I was struck with the impression that I did not know this band, my ur-band, I had no idea who these people were. What songs these were. Which isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy them. I did. I think. The crowd was way more into it than I was, perhaps they had purchased the other 3 albums — Machina, Machina II, and most recently Zeitgeist. I felt bad. Cory and Nick asked me to review this band. What the hell was I doing here? What did I know about the Smashing Pumpkins? I mean, I have the t-shirt, but beyond that…?

why are you posting this paragraph from a guy who doesn’t know the band or know why he was at the gig? lol

  2. Cory Says:

Although yes, Hank wrote those words, in fairness to both him and your readers, you know that sentence is a little out of context & should suggest your readers to take the whole article in to better understand his sentiment.

i thought Hank came across just fine even in that seemingly clueless paragraph. he’s the favorable example here! and the rest of his review makes evident how in tune he is with this band’s spirit despite years out of touch with their music. so yeah, Hank rules!

Hi - please take down the photo above on this post, as it directly violates copyrights and photo release forms from the Smashing Pumpkins.

Damn, man. give the guy a break. He’s photographer, not a music journalist. You’re gonna use his pictures and then try and make him look bad? This is journalism? Why not just correct his mistakes and move on?

I chose one picture out of a dozen, linked it, credited it, and linked it in the post. Those are not the actions of someone who would be “using” his pictures in the negative-connotation sense of the word. We made it easy for him to find us and request that the picture be taken down.

If he were just a photographer, then he would just take pictures. He’s a writer, and he pretended to knowledge he doesn’t have, and making stuff up sucks.

Actually jjb, Tom really is a photographer:

Putting four paragraphs on a blog does not a writer make. If you had bothered to look at the author history on cvillemuse, you’d have seen that this was Tom’s only post. So far, I’m way more impressed with his writing ability than yours. Making stuff up really does suck, indeed.

    Writer (n.): One who writes.

So, baconfat, you’re saying that since Tom’s a photographer, it’s ok that he posted something presented as fact that is completely inaccurate? I’m not sure I follow the logic there.

But man, Tom Daly, those are some niiiiiiiiiiiice photos.
