Say What? DRM-free MP3s FTW?

On one of the Ticketmaster presale pages today, I spied this box down below the order submission form:
It looks like the official website will be offering DRM-free mp3s of the live show recording for $16.22. (And the audiophiles weep. Ohhhh the agony of mp3s!!!1)
Is this a new program and will it be offered for the entire tour?
How will this affect the open-taping policy and the Live Music Archive?

If it’ through a specific entity and they’re charging for it, what could happen is that they have a special area marked off for the person recording the show, thus allowing them to have better recording equipment. Either that, or it’s a board recording.

I’m pretty sure the presale is only for American Express cardholders. If you order using an AmEx, I don’t think you need a presale code — you just request the number of tickets and use your AmEx to pay. There are certain AmEx Gold presales, but I don’t know the details of those. Assuming you have to pay with your AmEx Gold card there too.

actually, if you try to buy a metallica ticket through ticketmaster, you get the same offer about livemetallica.com mp3’s. but when you go to livemetallica.com, they offer flac and mp3. since it’s the same company doing livesmashingpumpkins.com, it’ll be the same thing. you will see flac! but just not through ticketmaster.

Saw Pearl Jam in Columbia, SC, in early summer. They did the same exact thing. A lot of promotion through Verizon, but it was called Bootleg music. Kinda cool to get specific concert dates and setlists. http://pearljam.com/goods/bootlegs.php to read about the specifics of the downloads and such

I wonder if they’ll be straight soundboard feeds, or if they’ll have a little bit more of the crowd mixed in… :)
