A report from the Bridge School Benefit

Via friend-of-the-blog Q-Dog comes word of today’s acoustic show at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Silicon Valley, where the Smashing Pumpkins performed among other artists to benefit The Bridge School. Q-Dog attributes this setlist to a printed copy that a fan received at the show, on which we’ve also gotten some high-level confirmation:

99 Floors
Owata
Sunkissed
The Rose March
A Song for a Son
Disarm

Set closer “Disarm” featured vocal stylings from guest Josh Groban, while the previously promised “Sunkissed” arrived along with newies “Owata” and “A Song for a Son”.

UPDATE: As you can see in the above detail from a picture by Flickr user Bryce Edwards, the new hornists and violinist joined the band on stage today. Nine Pumpkins now?!

More new songs? Holy shit, it’s like pre-Machina all over again.

(10:13 PM) jjb: it’s a Chickasaw word meaning to hunt
(10:13 PM) jillysp: i was going to say
(10:13 PM) jillysp: Me Want Blue Beads
(10:13 PM) jjb: and i was going to say
(10:13 PM) jjb: Owata’s that mean?

  3. jjb Says:

(10:13 PM) jillysp: i was in a play once in like 4th grade
(10:13 PM) jillysp: that was my role
(10:13 PM) jillysp: i played sacajawea
(10:14 PM) jillysp: and i had some crazy headdress my grandparents gave us because i’m like 1/16th indian or some shit
(10:14 PM) jillysp: and i wore that headdress in our little elementary school play about lewis and clark and an incomprehensibly innocent view of how american history came to be

(10:15 PM) jillysp: and i had to make some idiotic line like, “No take ‘em, no want ‘em, gotta have blue beads - blue beads!”
    (10:15 PM) jillysp: literally
    (10:15 PM) jjb: haha
(10:15 PM) jillysp: i believe that was the exact sing-song chant line i had to sing/shout in this play
(10:15 PM) jillysp: i think there is likely photographic evidence of this story
(10:15 PM) jillysp: there are people that still live with those views, jason
(10:15 PM) jjb: maybe i should post the rest of this story so you don’t come off as racist
(10:16 PM) jillysp: i think they are the ones voting for mccain

  4. Not Important Says:

Heres hoping we can get some footage or audio of these new songs soon

    dramatic stances

  5. jjb Says:

    Not a new song:

  6. Not Important Says:

Seems like Josh forgot some lyrics and Billy really can sing damn good these days

Anyone who is seeing this line-up is a lucky mofo

  7. lala Says:

    how are the new song?

  8. jm Says:

I’ll let someone else describe the new songs in detail (or let them speak for themselves if they were recorded), but I think Owata is destined to be a hit. Fast & poppy, with a catchy riff along the lines of Drown or 1979 (except sped up). And the chorus is something like, “Such a beautiful night.” If I had to describe in one word I’d say: “Exhilirating.”

  9. jcoriha Says:

The show was great. Billy seemed really into, and enjoyed playing the new songs, as well as the “old”. The new songs were really great. Seemed really into “Song for a Son”. “Disarm” was actually a pretty good version. Billy seemed tired of it at the Fillmore, but seemed to enjoy it today.

By the way, the next time someone screams “where’s Darcy” near me (this is the 3rd time) I swear I will make them regret it. Some people decide to move on with their lives, Darcy, Billy, Jimmy, James, and the rest of us included. Please do the same, or keep your opinion to yourself instead of annoying those around you. —-

I am digging the fact that the band is doing things they seem to enjoy regardless of the crowd (who did seem to enjoy it today). After all the smack talking I see all the time online, SP outnumbered any other bands shirts at the show today, at least 10 to 1, and none of the other shirts were even for bands on the bill. Smashing Pumpkins clears still means a lot to many people, and I would suggest checking any footage of this show you can find.

  10. Phoenix Says:

I filmed each song and I will put it up when soon.

Though I will note the following:
    1) my flash card got filled up and I lost the last 30 seconds of The Rose March
    2) I’m missing a part in the middle with Josh Groban singing Disarm with the pumpkins.

I do find it funny that Josh Groban actually forgot a line :-)

  11. Not Important Says:

    Hell yeah Phoenix

Put it up and I’ll buy you a fancy virtual beverage

  12. Phoenix Says:

Ok its taking me forever to convert to a format YouTube accepts but here is the first one…

    99 Floors

p.s. thanks for the great podcast you guys make.

  13. Phoenix Says:

Weird the code did not work… Well I guess only admins can do that :-(

I’ll try a few different ways and see what happened:

  16. alaya Says:

    thanx Phoenix

Owata sounds lovely song, although i want them to work on arrangement more, especially drums. just “d d t d / d d t d” is too simple and not synchronising with vocals/lyrics.

  17. drevpile Says:

    drum being wrong = wrong

  18. melabonbon Says:

Thanks Phoenix. Owata is really pretty.

  19. Phoenix Says:

    Song 3: Sunkissed

While this song is known to us thanks to the American Gothic EP this is its first live performance.

  20. Phoenix Says:

    Song 4: The Rose March

Like I said earlier I was unable to record the last 30 seconds or so of the song when my memory card got full. Oh well things don’t always go to plan.

  21. 34 Says:

Hm, and here I was going to say that Owata (or, more accurately, owatta (終わった)) is Japanese for “finished” or “over”.

  22. Phoenix Says:

    Song 5: A Song for a Son

Another new and unheard song that I am happy to share with you. I only wished that I could have had less people chatting while I was recording these.

  23. axelease Says:

Thanks so much for sharing, Phoenix!

  24. Phoenix Says:

    Song 6: Disarm

A popular song preformed by the Pumpkins but featuring the vocals of Josh Groban. The recording is incomplete and as such it is in two sections. So I am posting both of them. I do find it interusting that Josh Groban missed the line “The bitterness of one who’s left alone”.

To: Not Important, drevpile, alaya, melabonbon, axelease and the 368 other people that have seen the videos in the past 3 hours; your welcome, and I’m glad to help.

I have loved the pumpkins since the mid 90’s and this was only the second time I have ever seen them perform. I love how giving the pumpkins community is with music and videos, please keep up the great work everyone :-)

    Enjoy

Nice to see that the article on http://consequenceofsound.net/ used my videos :-)

I just wish that I had the full Disarm video since the others have more shaking and more people in the way…. Hopefully someone closer has an even better recording that they’d wish to share. Humh… I wonder if anyone has a copy of the video footage shot by the benefit itself?

  33. Shannon Says:

Thank you, Phoenix! It’s great to see these - I had such a great time yesterday- we were section 202 row K. It was great to meet other Pumpkins fans in the audience, like a father and his son who came all the way from Napa, which I thought was really cute. Yay for new songs!!
