More action, less drama; it’ll be “G.L.O.W.” at Spike awards
October 14th, 2008 by jjbtags: G.L.O.W., awards, radio
The Spike “Scream” awards, while seeking to honor “everything that is great about COMICS, FANTASY, SCI-FI, and HORROR”, dispense with suspense:
The third annual televised event tapes Saturday, October 18 at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles, CA and premieres Tuesday, October 21 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on Spike TV. …
The Grammy Award-winning rock band Smashing Pumpkins will perform their new hit “G.L.O.W..”
You hear that? “G.L.O.W.” = hit. How do we know?
Currently the #1 most added song at Modern Rock Radio, “G.L.O.W.,” has already received ninety-four adds since its release two weeks ago and has logged over 850 spins in its first week alone.
All true enough, but I bet the band would like to see the song get unstuck from the #25 spot it’s held for a few days now.

It was a good idea…and there IS a bunch of “Watchmen” stuff going on at the awards. I suppose playing GLOW probably helps commercially more. And maybe Snyder is sick of hearing all the fandorks complain about the anachronism.

Don’t think you can really call anything a hit after a week or two on the charts, but of course you need to sell the sizzle in the PR…
And yeah, it wouldn’t make sense to play anything but “G.L.O.W.,” Watchmen notwithstanding.

^ I second that.
jjb, the bet isn’t over just yet.

Why do you guys care so much about what people think of SP and whether or not something is a hit? As long as you like the band what else matters? Get over it.

Anon,
Considering there are, what, five people running this daily blog, I’m pretty sure HU can cover the band from any and all angles. And who says anyone cares? We were fans when the band was huge, and we were fans when they weren’t. Not to mention the above posters are simply reacting to terminology used in a press release.
Get over it.

i agree with anon…. the conversations could be more a…. in depth? about meaning? or …other kinds of “meaning-ness.” who listens to a song because of what competing “ranking” it has? ….and if you do, i feel sorry for you. other conversations about the song could help.
ahem…
October 15th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
yet, that’s okay.
that kind of indepth and expansive meaningness just doesn’t seem to be included within the scope of the exclusively and narrowly “marketed” and “marketing” focus of this hypertunnel-visioned website.
and again, that’s okay…to. this is not the ends of the web.

“too.”

I remember wanting to get a sp tattoo and then thinking, well one day they could become an embarrassment and then the tattoo will suck. Im glad I decided not to get the tattoo, this band is becoming more and more embarrassing by the day with its SHIT songs like glow and playing SHIT gigs like this. Glow is the most boring unoriginal effortless pos. I understand that billy and jimmy are just using the name of the band so they can pay for their families finances for the next few generations but it just sucks to hack apart the sp legacy for this.

ryma,
I think you probably have a good point. However… Unfortunately I think the most interesting thing about GLOW right now are the marketing moves the band is making around it. Not exactly the most substantial work they’ve done…

Bruce, why judge the revived band by GLOW and the Spike awards? Why not judge them by, say, your favorite new song and the Asheville residency? And why not judge “the SP legacy” by, say, “The End Is the Beginning Is the End” and the VH1 Fashion Awards?

If I judged them by the end is the beginning is the end and the vh1 fashion awards they would be worse off!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:34 am
exactly. Smashing Pumpkins are getting better all the time!

Remember “Tales of a Scorched Earth”? God they used to suck…
