Our guitar heroes rock the West Hollywood Best Buy

Kevin Bronson of Buzzbands.LA has a firsthand account:
If you wanted the hits, you stuck with the video games. But if you wanted stimulation and not simulation, you hung with the Pumpkins, whose set for the Guitar Hero World Tour launch party included, oh, about two hits — if you count “G.L.O.W.,” the new tune the seminal Chicago rockers released via the game. There were a couple covers, a couple tunes from deep in their catalog and some fresher stuff that let the six-piece blast into a psych-jam-metal-core haze. Take that, button pushers.
Over a dozen pictures from the event have been uploaded at Getty Images.

What does it mean when a band plays a crassly corporate gig, but ruins it by playing obscure songs and covers no one cares about? Sounds a little subversive. If I had my druthers, maybe I’d have them not so much playing for Best Buy. But showing up to the party and shitting in Best Buy’s bed really does sound like something The Smashing Pumpkins would do.

PS… I am counting the days until the Pumpkins show up at a gig and play nothing pre-2007, when they become THIS Smashing Pumpkins and not THAT Smashing Pumpkins, as they did in 1998 with Adore and its tour.
Pow!

yup. kinda like “we’re taking over” with EVERY light…
inside the matrix…
from the inside outside in between upside down reverse angles over…
“further up and further in…”
*roar*

… and those tiny little David Fincher cameras that can go inside flashlights…

to drbenway: on the show that i saw on the adore tour (click my name for the link) which was in philly, and had a typical setlist for that tour a quarter of the songs were pre-adore. so i’m not sure what it is you’re alluding to about the adore tour? perhaps you were under the impression that they only played adore songs on that tour, which by doing a little bit of research, you would notice wasn’t correct.

he was marking the difference between adore era where the sets DID consist mainly of adore songs and the zeitgeist tour which contained pretty much no songs from zeitgeist. i would LOVE to see a setlist consisting mostly of zeitgeist-to-now material.

I believe that the cutoff during the Adore tour was to no longer play anything pre-MCIS because they were “tired of playing those songs”. This lasted until, what, 10/31/98 when they played Today?
Personally I think restricting their catalog in order to prove a point is kind of contrived. The whole reason I first became a fan of the band was their depth and variety, the moment I realized a throwaway 2nd disc song on MCIS (In the Arms of Sleep) was better than all but maybe the hit singles of the other alternative bands I was listening to at the time. To take away the depth and variety and say “we’re only playing songs we wrote after 2007″ would make them just like any other 2-year-old rock band. It seemed like a stunt during the Adore tour, and would seem like a stunt now.
As for this Best Buy appearance though, I wholeheartedly approve.

At the show I was at in ‘98 they played four pre-Adore songs.

… and I can see the broader point I was trying to make wasn’t understood by certain quarters. I’m not sure what else I ought to have expected…

Ok, all I want to know is what kind of guitar is that he is playing in that picture? I can’t find a better picture either. Seems like a new one he’s going to be playing this tour or am I wrong here?

i think that guitar is the gibson he has been using for songs like superchrist and new HMM… the one with the crosses on the frets..
anyways… SOMEONE GET ME A LINK TO THE NEW SONGS!! BAHHHFJHARHA!!!

Ok, I figured it was the Iommi SG from the fret inlays but the headstock in the picture just looks really odd for a SG. Could just be the picture.
