Pumpkins break taboo, to play Halloween concert in Columbus

They’ve often tried to dodge the holiday they should own, but this time they will embrace it: the Smashing Pumpkins will be playing (and presumably opening their “20th Anniversary” tour) on All Hallows’ Eve at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. Some would call this happiness, others mere progress.

Our podcast host obviously exercised his great influence to snag a hometown show. Lucky ducky!

That was it. I told Billy I didn’t feel like driving up to Cleveland and that if they didn’t come to Columbus the podcast would go negative. Either that or he read my comments complaining about the livedownloads.com prices and correctly assumed that I would purchase any show that I go to regardless of price.

damnit!!! i live an hour from columbus and two from cleveland. i already got my tickets for the cleveland show but had i known they were going to add this date, i would have waited. i guess this is an opportunity to see them on back-to-back days but i’ve never been that type of person. not to mention the $$$$

I was due to go to a Pumpkins show on Halloween during the 2007 tour, but we all know how Jimmy ruined that history!

Yeah, I’m a week late commenting on this, but really? “Tried to dodge”? I’m surprised that such obviously untrue comments would find their way on HipstersUnited.com… especially from YOU, Jason! Didn’t you check the TH first? Hell, the ‘98 show should’ve immediately come to mind, what w/ the Beatles costumes (as has already been pointed out) & the “BIILLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!1″ screamer on the soundboard XYU recording. >_<

    http://www.spfc.org/tours/date.html?date=19931031 (TV broadcast)

OK, maybe you can claim that the TV performance didn’t count, and the KISS show & BSB weren’t planned by them, but that still leaves 2 normal shows around them. And only in 1991 and 1996 were there a significant number of other shows immediately around Halloween that one could argue they deliberately “dodged” that particular date.

Eric. (1) I refuse to define “often” for you or explain how it differs from the modifier “always”. (2) I cannot readily find the citation but Billy has mentioned before that they’ve tried to avoid it [ed. I will be highly indebted to anyone who finds this reference]. So, my statement was accurate. Think for a second: the band’s name is SMASHING PUMPKINS. With a name like that, you are either avoiding playing on Halloween or you are playing on it; indifference is not a real option. Most years, they have avoided it.

  18. jjb Says:

Oh, and I forgot: Halloween fell on a Tuesday the year they put out the hotly anticipated double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and they chose to release the album on October 24. Pfft, if that doesn’t prove it to you, nothing will.

  19. tcm Says:

are you kidding? Halloween is THE time to smash those pumpkins. that’s what i do on Halloween. pumpkin smashing!

    well, see you next year.
