Smashing Pumpkins on “Jimmy Kimmel”: the HU liveblog
October 24th, 2008 by jjbtags: G.L.O.W., television, video, live
The first word has come in from HU correspondent Seb, on the scene tonight at the El Capitan Entertainment Center in Hollywood for the taping of ABC-TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” program.
8:24pm: “They’re soundchecking ‘G.L.O.W.’ for the second time.”
8:25pm: “Hollywood High School’s football team is getting a treat.” I presume that means those young men are In The House. [ed. I presumed incorrectly - see comments.]
8:31pm: “And a third time for ‘G.L.O.W.’ So now I’ve heard it precisely three times.”
8:33pm: “I’m in line with all the other weirdos. It’s actually a surprisingly young crowd.” Hm, who else goes to tapings of late-night TV shows?
8:48pm: “Soundchecking ‘Tarantula’.”
8:51pm: “United States.” It’s the Zeitgeist first anniversary tour!
9:05pm: Seb may try to send a picture, but he’ll have to use a different phone. Sigh! I guess we are in a recession…
9:21pm: “I’m in. Kimmel show being projected on screen.”
9:22pm: “And this now marks the longest I’ve ever watched the Jimmy Kimmel show.”
9:42pm: Is Tom Arnold on yet, Seb?! “Yep. He’s talking about his new movie, in which he plays a child molester.”
9:59pm: “They have taken the stage dressed all in black.”
10:01pm: “G.L.O.W.”

10:02pm: “This song sounds like ‘Spilled Milk’. Not that I’m complainin’.”
10:04pm: “Great performance.” HU, including correspondents: in the tank for Corgan.
10:09pm: “Tarantula.”
10:12pm: “No idea what this song is.” [ed. Hmm…how much does Seb know his stuff?] “They are in good spirits. Billy with rad spider shirt.”

10:17pm: “Speed Kills!!!!” [ed. This was the unknown song.]
10:20pm: “Superchrist”.
10:26pm: “Into ‘United States’ without a hiccup.”
10:29pm: “And there’s the hiccup. Billy made Jimmy stop and slow down, I think.” Haha…
10:39pm: “It’s over. They brought the goods.” And so is this, and so did you, Seb - thanks!

Yay, a liveblog! :) Can’t say I’m surprised to hear they’re soundchecking their NEW SINGLE, d’oh.
October 24th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
one of my friends waiting around there told me they have also soundchecked porcelina and tarantula. She just called me with some United States! REVOLUTION!
October 24th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Does the band even need to soundcheck Tarantula and US at this point? They’ve played them pretty much nonstop since the reformation. Porcelina is an interesting choice if they end up playing it, hopefully the crowd is ready for a long minishow.
October 24th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Yah with us and porcelina that would be a pretty interesting show for a tv audience
October 24th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Seb, re: whether “Porcelina” was soundchecked: “If so, it was before I got here. But if it’s true, thanks for the spoiler, jerk.”
October 24th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
sorry =P
October 24th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
LOL, oh, I’m sorry - he meant me :)
October 24th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
well now I know that they will be playing Tarantula at the end of the credits..I was hoping for Porcelina, but I’ll take any Pumpkins song!
October 24th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
damn I hope everyone enjoyed this! Superchrist, wow too bad that wasn’t on tv!!
October 24th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
wow superchrist into us was cool! =) (i’m listening in via phone LOL) the audience sounds good but maybe its just the people in front hehe US seems to have a little bit of a shorter intro but it might just be i cant hear properly
October 24th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Sounds like a blast! Nice decision to play.. um.. all heavy songs. Guess Kimmel’s probably into that kind of thing.. if you know what I mean.
October 24th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Been watching the show; they just announced that you will be able to stream the off-air performances at the “Pontiac Garage” link on their site. Find that here and we’ll be on the lookout.

They came across lifeless from what I saw. And wouldn’t you want to crank that bass up way high when playing that song live?
A bit dissapointing…
Picked up with Tarantula though, just when its getting cut off…
October 25th, 2008 at 12:08 am
I was kinda disappointed to be honest. Like Floppy said, it came across as lifeless, and I was straining to hear the bass.
Plus, it seems like every time I hear G.L.O.W. I like it less and less. Something about it just feels so phoned in.
October 25th, 2008 at 12:11 am
I love Tarantula. Damn them for cutting it off.
GLOW did seem lifeless. Oh well.
October 25th, 2008 at 12:36 am
jesus christ could be the lead singer and you guys wouldn’t be happy.
October 25th, 2008 at 12:38 am
two things rilly quick: i was saying g.l.o.w. sounded like spilled milk not superchrist, and the hollywood high school football stadium was right across the street from the stage, and they were playing a game during the performance. billy mentioned that he was distracted by the game after a false start of a song, saying it reminded him of when he used to take steroids
October 25th, 2008 at 12:42 am
I remember when Billy played left tackle.
October 25th, 2008 at 1:37 am
If jesus christ was the lead singer of this band i would be pissed off and forced to gain access to a sniper rifle
October 25th, 2008 at 1:43 am
Sebastian is ftw.
October 25th, 2008 at 1:45 am
I hope we can steal and youtube the offair performances!!!!!!!!
October 25th, 2008 at 2:05 am
seb: two things rilly quick
Thanks for correcting it. Several of your texts arrived obviously very much later than you had sent them, which is why not all of them appear - some of them I knew I didn’t know to what they referred. Somehow though the texts that said which songs they were playing arrived promptly and in order.

jillysp: Nice decision to play.. um.. all heavy songs. Guess Kimmel’s probably into that kind of thing.. if you know what I mean.
Are you saying Jimmy Kimmel is into heavy songs ’cause he’s like, heavy? :P”
little Li.

The field reporter didnt know the song speed kills hmmm????S?S??
October 25th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
I actually caught it on tv, and like some of the others, I kind of felt like the performance was sort of lifeless. They sounded good for sure, but something about it struck me as really ‘meh’. I thought tarantula sort of had the same problem. I’m digging GLOW as a tune though more and more all the time….
October 25th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
would have liked to see speed kills on the tube!
October 25th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
the first few bars (like the whole intro) to ’speed kills’ has been totally changed musically. you can’t recognize it at first.
October 25th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Some one was texting that fast before he started to sing WOAH!!!
October 25th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I think the lifeless nature of the performance is part and parcel of appearing on a television talk show. at least they did play several songs, rather than just one, but it must be different from playing a typical concert.
October 25th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Someone said something bout Corgan once taking steroids once… If that was a joke, I think Corgan really should start up on it.
