Corgan incites, implores Chicago Theatre crowd

At the very end of last night’s first “Black Sunshine” hometown show, the Smashing Pumpkins singer said this:
This doesn’t speak to everyone, but many of you — we don’t know what the fuck you want from us… Last I checked we were an “alternative” band. “Alternative” means different than what everyone else is doing, including those reunion bands that go out and just play the old songs. So, for those of you we disappointed, we’re sorry; we hope you give us another chance. For those of you that love us, we will
report totorture [ed. of course] you for twenty more years, at least. God bless.

He actually acknowledged the fact that not everyone in the audience is against them/him?
I feel a tiny bit better now.

“For those of you that love us, we will report to you for twenty more years, at least.”
It’s funny, I was just thinking yesterday about how many more years the band has in them and if Billy would still be rocking at 61. It’s nice to see that at least for the moment he thinks so.

Last time I checked, they were an American Gothic band - whatever the fuck that means. In fact, we were explicitly told to refer to them as such.
How can audience ever understand him if he doesn’t know he keeps sending out mixed messages? I pity them both.

I was thinking the exact same thing!
I think he was saying he is alternative because he was referring to what the “audience” thinks of him, as alternative. Real fans know hes american gothic. This is all strange to me but whatever ill go along on this crazy ride.

I think it’s “for those of you that love us, we’ll torture you for another 20 years.”

people around my school were talking about this yesterday in various classes (all my friends were telling me, “Ian, kids were talking about Billy!”), and they all said that “Billy was yelling at the crowd for 20 minutes straight! He was telling people to fuck off, then he’d start tantrums and sound like he was actually angry and hurt then seem like he was joking! Then he would stomp around and yell some more.” Unless there was more yelling than this video showed, then I’m glad what everyone was saying wasn’t (totally) true.
I’ve been trying to stay totally under the radar for the tour, so i can be totally surprised this weekend, but with all this dramz, it’s very hard to do so. Now I don’t know whether to be excited for the shows or totally frightened. I’ll probably go with both.

I really don’t understand what all the fuss was about all of this! This seems like a typical Billy discussion/response to the crowd. Nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly not a “tantrum…”

What a bitter boy.

Billy Corgan is more intelligent than nearly every person in that crowd, and almost certainly more creatively talented than everyone there. Don’t you think it grates on a man with his abilities and accomplishments to be pissed on by drunk hecklers and lazy indie journalists?
