G.L.O.W. Set for Early Release
November 3rd, 2008 by christags: G.L.O.W., superchrist, gaming, releases
SmashingPumpkins.com reports that G.L.O.W. will be released on iTunes tomorrow as the b-side of what they’re calling a Digital 45:
How is this a digital 45? Well historically 45’s had enough room for one song per side creating the main single (the A-side) and a subsequent song (the B-side). G.L.O.W. will be sold together with Superchrist as a digital 45 at a discounted rate on iTunes starting tomorrow.
With the song not slated to become available as a Guitar Hero download until November 15th, does this mean that the band can no longer take credit for giving Guitar Hero fans exclusive access to music before anyone else?

it seems pretty silly to call this the first digital 45. But hopefully it has some sweet artwork.

Most bizarre use of white space in recent memory… ;)

The “digital 45″ is out in Europe, with a strange but interesting artwork that resembles something from the Gish era (well, imho).

This is pretty stupid.
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
@Pizza Club: Why? The fact that they’re marketing their new music to wider audiences who may or may not play Guitar Hero? And that you can pick up the new music for a lot cheaper than the cost of Guitar Hero: World Tour plus the extra play pack? How is that stupid?
From a marketing perspective, seems pretty smart to me. And I can’t speak for everyone, but I know a lot of people without Guitar Hero were irked they couldn’t get it via other venues. Seems like a perfect solution for them.

Maybe he was saying the post is pretty stupid.
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:36 pm
all those irked people dont have the internet?
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:37 pm
I’d be kind of pissed if I’d paid $90 for guitar hero and then heard about this
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
this is cool but calling it a digital 45 is kind of stupid. i mean, there have been digital singles already what’s so special about this that makes it a digital 45?

Because it’s hip, DUH! ::rollseyes::
November 3rd, 2008 at 10:56 pm
besides, other bands have already used the “digital 45″ term
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
@Zave — Can you post that artwork you are referring to?
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:18 pm
maybe it’s meant to be the first in a line of “iTunes Digital 45s” from various artists, with the discounted rate and such. and maybe that’s groundbreaking for iTunes, i have no idea.
isn’t G.L.O.W. the A-side?
not true at all. if you substitute the word “typically” for “historically” then it is true. kind of. actually the earliest incarnation, the 78, had no designated A or B side (single/not single). The catalogue # would usually tell you which was recorded first though.
A lot of early 45’s also had no A or B side. There was no Hit b/w Non-hit because 45s were the primary form of release and it was all a gamble. You pressed 2 songs and sent them out to radio stations and they (+ listeners) decided what the “hit” was. They were “promos” sort of speak.
Then a lot of 45’s (like the All-Star label) had 2 songs per side.
edit: Also a lot of smart-asses back in the day had an “A” side and an “AA” side. lol
edit: It wasn’t until about 2 decades after the invention of the “45″ that A-sides (the single) and B-sides (extra song) occured, and that was when artists began recording LP albums primarily and then releasing singles from that album.
I’m in New Zealand and it’s available on the NZ and Australian iTunes stores right now!! Yeah, I have just purchased my first digital 45″! I wonder if I’m the 1st? It’s GLOWING down under! I like the cover by the way too!

What’s up dogs! I think calling this a digital 45 is really dumb. Later bros!

and looking at the verbiage in the itunes store, its they who are calling it a digital 45, not the band. it probably is the start of something they will offer for other bands in the future.

@jjb
The “Digital 45″ part of it is stupid. We’ve had digital singles for years. This isn’t the first anything.
November 4th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
The reason this is the first digital 45 is because nobody was dumb enough to call anything a digital 45 before. I’m sure we can name plenty of 2 song digital releases, I know of several off the top of my head.
I bet bcorg had a dream and he woke up and jotted this plan down, and then said “I was like whoa!”
November 4th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
digital 45, lamest idea i’ve ever heard about selling music.
anyway, they lied about GLOW being Guitar Hero exclusive. i’m more concerned about that.
November 4th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
why would anyone pay for Superchrist when it was already released, for FREE?
rC
“no brains” - no kidding
November 4th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
@drevpile: For a large number of people iTunes is the only way to get music. Superchrist was released for free in a limited-edition CD that you could only get by showing up at a Guitar Center on the day it was released. Anyone who sees the band on tour, likes the song, and looks into buying it would have no way of doing so if it wasn’t for sale on iTunes. Not saying it’s a reason why you or I should buy it, but it’s a good enough reason for the band to offer it.
November 4th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
umm…so what if it’s called a digital 45? Does anyone really care? GLOW is a great song…I mean it really does rock.
But what I do want to know –and i can’t believe there hasn’t been a post about this– where in the hell are the concerts on livedownload.com?!?! Everything STILL says pre-order. They don’t take that long to put up the shows for other bands.
Did the Pumpkins change their minds?
November 4th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
“Their minds?” This is Billy Corgan we’re talking about.
