Toronto #2: Bearing Witness to “White Crosses”

November 4th, 2008 by jillysp
tags: tour, live

Last night, the Smashing Pumpkins took to the stage in Toronto for the first of their two-night stand there.  I’m going to have to say — I’m a bit jealous since they get to be out of the country and away from the insane media coverage of the electionCan you say absentee ballots, Billy?

HU’s liveblogging competition tonight is apparently The Daily Show.  Pshaw.

Since JJB is volunteering at the polls today as an election official, I am going to try to bring you a bit of news from HU friend 34 once again.  He’s getting a better wi-fi signal today, but doesn’t guarantee live show updates.  However, I do have some soundcheck notes from him, but I’ll hide them behind the jumpDefinite spoiler alert!  Find everything below now that the show is over.

11:44am - 34 reports that as he was waiting for breakfast, Landslide was on the radio.  Alas — the Stevie Nicks version.  But is it like the kind of foreshadowing your high school Brit Lit teacher spoke of?

2:50pm - “I hear bass drum, but suspect (and hope) it’s just the techs,” says 34.

3:03pm - 34 reports that a “Big Bearded Guy” has come out to move the cones.  He speculates the band should arrive soon.  Moments later, I receive word that BBG is wearing short sleeves in this freezing Canadian weather.  Are Canadians better equipped to deal with the cold?

3:21pm - Scratch that.  BBG is now wearing a big black jacket.  As if you cared.

3:44pm - 34 reports: “Not much luck so far.  Got here a little before noon along with another girl whom I recognized from outside last night, & she had to go back to Ottawa today, but decided to hang out a while to see if the band showed up.  One finally did a little before 3, but it was empty.  She left around 3:10.  Of course, 10m later I saw Lisa go in- she looked over, smiled & said hi on her way in the door. I’m going to assume at this point that there won’t be a soundcheck today, esp after <spoiler songs> were in yesterdays… it’s now 3:44, and getting cold.”

3:45pm - Ugh.  “Ran into smashing0 & was talking when the van pulled up.  Everyone went in without really looking over.  Guess I’m slummin’ it again.”

Okay, now it gets juicy…

UPDATE: NOW WITH FULL SETLIST DETAILS!!!

SOUNDCHECK //

4:55pm - Soundcheck kicks off with That’s The Way on acoustic.

5:05pm - Eric reports that they’re checking MCIS (!) with a violin lead, and likely horns and keys.  He remarks that it “sounds almost like the bagpipes that are playing a few blocks away.”

5:12pm - Sit down, internet fanboys.  They’re checking Gossamer.

5:27pm - 34 mentions it took them awhile to recognize the song, but that the band is playing Crestfallen.

5:35pm - Some sort of horn fanfare is checked straight into a “heavy song” with lyrics along the lines of “we are loaded guns.. just like everyone.”  We’re wondering if this is new?  Is it a cover?  34 mentions that the riff goes like this: 4—3—1—5-6b- :|| on 16ths.

5:39pm - Unknown song ends and now Jimmy’s soundchecking the drums only, just practicing and tweaking for a moment.

5:40pm - Seems like the soundcheck is done for now.  That’s all for now, folks!

6:00pm - 34 has now migrated inside to watch the soundcheck with the band.  He reports that the horns are doing MCIS, and Tonight, Tonight on the steps.

6:13pm - Soma is again being soundchecked.

6:20pm - Another unknown song is being played, 34 describes it with a “wah-wah-wah-wah-synthy bass drone…”

6:30pm - 34 laments that he is “kicked back outside while I wait  for [the tour manager].  God, I hate security.  They’re doing that 1-2-3-4—6—- song again.”

6:50pm - Ava Adore.

6:54pm - 34 reports that the band’s tour manager “comes out with an after-show pass - Apparently they were gonna bring me in for the soundcheck, but changed their mind ’cause they’re working on ’secret stuff.’  Oh well, at least there’s the A/S.”  Are they on to the liveblog?!  Or is 34 not as 1337 as he used to be?

6:56pm - Cupid de Locke with faster, almost calypso-like drums.

6:59pm - 1979.

7:05pm - Soundcheck is done.  (For the second time?)

7:11pm - 34 snags a photo of the pass guide handed out to security (above) and heads on into the venue.  Again, not sure yet if he’s going to be able to communicate from inside the venue, but stay tuned tonight and try to pull yourself away from the election coverage for news of the Pumpkins second night in the T-dot.

1of1.jpgAND NOW ON TO THE SHOW:

8:02pm - PA Music, 34 haz it: Pearl Jam, “Jeremy.”  Then “Too Hot To Handle,” “Sabotage,” some KISS and “Bright Lights, City Lights.”

8:19pm - 34 says: “Lights out! uh-huh! blast, blast, blast. Synth intro, same as last night.”

8:21pm - The set opens up with Ava Adore.  Rock.  34 reports that Billy Corgan is rocking a black robe and dress with white accents, holding lit-up trick-or-treat pumpkin pail.  Sans guitar.  The lyric “drinking mercury” comes a bit too early.

8:26pm - Cupid de Locke is up next with Jimmy Chamberlin on a marching band drum on harness.  From his notes, it sounds like at this point Billy threw off his robe to reveal a black spider shirt & black shingle skirt.

8:28pm - 1979.

8:33pm - Billy grabs the acoustic guitar, thanks the audience, and clips on his harmonica!?  Moments later he says, “I used to know you, I used to care, iutky, are you still there?”  Straight into 99 Floors.

8:41pm - 34 reports that Billy loses harmonica for Owata: “Oh, what a beautiful sight, you are, oh, what a beautiful night…”

8:45pm - Next up: Sunkissed.  And Billy sneezed.

8:51pm - 34 says: “SOMA!!!!!!1  Crowd goes nuts, no backing vox.  Billy says: ‘Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen… Are you ready?’”

8:58pm - Cherub Rock.

9:02pm - Zero (for the run of hits).

9:04pm - 34 reports that Billy D-downtunes, straight into “BODIES!!!!!!!1″ and then makes some gratuitous Japanime smiley that I will never understand.

2of2.jpg9:09pm - Crestfallen, electric, with plenty of backing harmony.

9:13pm - I of the Mourning, but with the first “radio” verse omitted, skipped a solo.

9:19pm - Song for a Son.

9:26pm - 34 reports that Billy switches to acoustic guitar; and “all but BC/JS (both ac) leave. Someone yells Obama, “I don’t see any Obama up here… This is not an open forum, this is a rock concert.  We all know I do better when I sing, not when I talk…  I didn’t write this next song - I wish I did…”

9:29pm - Landslide, alternate arrangement with a sing along chorus.

9:32pm - They swap to acoustic guitars, commenting, “Now I -did- write this next one…” Disarm.

9:35pm - Billy is off to one side, Gingger starts playing over drone, and cue MCIS with Lisa on keys.

9:40pm - GALAPOGOS.  [ed.: OMG.]

9:45pm - Gossamer.

papersetlist.jpg10:01pm - Gossamer ends and there is a horn fanfare into As Rome Burns, just the same as soundcheck.

10:05pm - Sounds of Silence.  34 says: “Holy shit this is weird! But cool!”

10:11pm - Into “Little Red Riding Hood”?!

10:14pm - March Hare.  Billy Corgan on tambourine; tom beat.  “As I’m singin’ from the trees, (there’s faith somewhere)x3, (whatever will be will be again), x4 (will? we’ll?)”

10:19pm - 34 exclaims: “Suffer! Skips ATYSIATYA part, starts with walking bass.”

10:23pm - Billy has now exchanged the guitar for the “funky wooden clacker thingy” [vibraslap, yo], Ginger is on maracas, and the rest of the band is on various percussion for “Whatever will be will be again.”

10:27pm - “Destination yes, hesitation no… Age of Innocence.  Mid-song banter: ‘That is the end of the show.’”

10:35pm - Billy C. gives guitar away???!

10:39pm - Band back on stage for That’s the Way.  Billy on acoustic, Jeff on electric, Jimmy on tambourine.

10:43pm - Band returns to their normal instruments for some banter and a thank you.  Someone yells for Obama again, Billy says: “I’m very proud of my country for doing the right things.”  Crowd guy: “Billy for president!” “Yeah, right. I’d tax your ass so bad…”  After what I’m sure was a big laugh, Billy’s banter continued: “One more ride into interstellar space… so if you wanna leave…”  34 says: “Wahp wahp bass drone from soundcheck… “so high in the sky…”  d00d…  it’s I am One Part II - Holy. Fucking. Shit!!!  I am SO gonna try running outside to send this ASAP! shit, I’m -glad- I wasn’t in there for the schk!”

11:01pm - End show.

Okay, I am exhausted.  Sounds amazing.

  1. davin Says:

BBG = Gio. could that heavy song be As Rome Burns?

  2. jillysp Says:

It’s probably “As Rome Burns” which is what I expected. Sent 34 the lyrics via email to see if they rang a bell — we shall see. :)

    reC: “Pierpont Express”

  3. Rob Says:

    opening, MELLON COLLIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMAGINE THAT!

  4. dustrock Says:

I’d actually love MCIS as the closer….

  5. MonteLDS Says:

ya opening with MCIS, how unoriginal is that..

i hope it either is the opening encore song or ending one

  6. Soundcheck Says:

Thank you for giving us the soundcheck early this time.

  7. jillysp Says:

Haha, wait a second. People are complaining that not enough old stuff is being played, but now that they’re soundchecking old stuff there’s complaining about placement of the old songs?

Lord have mercy. My mother must’ve gotten to you and taught you how to execute a professional guilt trip. I’m fairly certain MCIS was a perfectly suitable opener for nearly two years. Heck, SPFC doesn’t even list it as an opener for 1996 because it can just be assumed.

  8. dustrock Says:

oh i’d be happy with it played anywhere in the set, I just thought it might be neat to hear it close out the show…..since Billy is into messing with our expectations.

  9. sone of a Says:

    ARE YOU NEVER PLEASED!??????!

  10. The Gaddrow Says:

Any one of those into last night’s setlist would be such an improvement. Fuck, I may have to go to LA after all.

  11. The Gaddrow Says:

Oh yeah. Hi, Jill. I never thanked you for totally snubbing me when you were in Vegas. That was pretty awesome.

  12. MonteLDS Says:

I just don’t care for the sentimental and obvious placing of certain songs. which MCIS falls under.

  13. Floppy Nono Says:

maybe they’ll close the show with farewell and goodnight? that would be pretty sweet, opening on MCIS and closing on that

  14. ji Says:

    soundchckd sweetsweet

  15. Floppy Nono Says:

that was not the real me up there (show is not canceled, hope you didn’t believe that) but glad to see my name being put to good use around here

  16. Floppy Nono Says:

and it’s been taken care of already i see, cheers! :)

  17. hiyo Says:

    hello cool show

  18. jillysp Says:

Don’t worry… We want the REAL Floppy Nono troll to speak. *grin*

  19. Steven Says:

awesome soundcheck. I’d love if it opened with MCIS.

  20. Floppy Nono Says:

yes, my evil (or is he my good?) twin is the only one that should exist on this blog. there’s only room for 2 of us on this fanblog

  21. davin Says:

is the flickr page gonna be updated again too?

  22. Floppy Nono Says:

official site says it will be and is also linking everyone to HU

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/thesmashingpumpkins/

  23. poopweiner Says:

anyone know if there were free drinks at the ‘pre show party’ for the VIP?

  24. glassOglass Says:

VIP means Varies In Places so canada probably not

  25. jillysp Says:

Clever name, Poop. I haven’t heard an affirmative from anyone - for any of the shows. If only. I saw the Foo Fighters last night as part of the work conference I’m at in San Francisco — the free booze certainly endeared the band to the audience quite easily.

And yes, you’re hearing that right. The Foos did a corporate gig. It was.. surreal.

    reC: “glasses survival”

  26. glassOglass Says:

Didnt Billy mention special guest playing at these 20 anniv shows? Probably in NY and LA and Chicago he may bring out some people.

  27. Rob Says:

i would rather go to a soundcheck than an actual concert!

  28. Floppy Nono Says:

flickr site is updated, SPMM is running late and they’re doing 1979 with a drum machine into jimmy

  29. Not Important Says:

Cupid De Locke? Holy shit thats awesome

    minute dunlevy

  30. Floppy Nono Says:

cherub rock and zero being played now as per flickr

  31. Steven Says:

    BODIES!

  32. Floppy Nono Says:

    BODIES JUST PLAYED!!!

  33. Steven Says:

Though now I’m confused as to which night is supposed to be which…

  34. drblaze Says:

SOMA just played with a nice intro.

  35. jillysp Says:

Wow, very, very cool. Can’t wait to hear Bodies in NYC! *crosses fingers*

  36. Steven Says:

Jill: Do you have any idea which show is supposed to be which?

  37. Floppy Nono Says:

i don’t even think billy corgan knows that steven

  38. Steven Says:

hahah that’s what i’m afraid of Floppy

  39. jillysp Says:

I don’t know that it’s possible to figure it out. I think it’s just totally arbitrary; I’m going to predict a similar format as last night; three-part ‘act’ as one reviewer called it. I would imagine there’s another acoustic set mid-show and back into heavy stuff. Let’s see if I can do a side by side comparison here…

  40. Floppy Nono Says:

yeah, it looks maybe like billy decided to reverse setlists as a bit of a dirty little trick perhaps but it’ll take more songs to be sure i guess

  41. WTF Says:

Steven, wtf are you talking about? Which show is supposed to be which….. there is only one show happening right now in Toronto. The other show was last night.. if youre referring to the flickr page, the night 2 photos start with the photo that says “Night 2 begins” :erm:

  42. Steven Says:

I just wish it was clearer which show is Black Sunshine and which is White Crosses. I assume tonight is White Crosses, but wasn’t that supposed to be mellower or whatever? And he’s wearing a black shirt tonight and wore a white one last night (although that’d be just like Billy, wouldn’t it)

    rC: dejection marketed

  43. Steven Says:

WTF: Black Sunshine vs. White Crosses…that’s what I was referring to.

  44. Floppy Nono Says:

well i think billy said the setlists are supposed to be the same so if you’re waiting to see which show you should buy or whatever just wait for the next set of shows and see if they’re the same.

if you’re just wondering for the sake of wondering, last night WAS supposed to be black sunshine and tonight white crosses but im thinking maybe billy lured people into getting the show they thought the ywould get and then turned it around on them (giving black sunshine the white crosses show and white crosses the black sunshine)

  45. Steven Says:

I’m wondering just to wonder. I already have tickets to the second Auditorium Theatre show in Chicago, so I’m trying to figure out a bit of what I could expect, but I didn’t know if people here, who were more “in the know” had any idea.

  46. Floppy Nono Says:

i think you should expect what they play tonight (you mean you have the 2nd of the pair right?).

billy said the BS/WC shows had the same setlists for each pair so, unless he went nuts and changed that, if you have a white crosses show you will get everything they are playing tonight

  47. Not Important Says:

    Bodies? holy SHIT

    rC: dreams and

  48. Steven Says:

that’s what i’m assuming too. we’ll see though. we all know ol bill may decide to change his mind again

  49. Steven Says:

    LANDSLIDE IOAHDAJDA

  50. dustrock Says:

oh man, if people could only go to 1 show and decided on last night compared to tonight….

  51. Not Important Says:

yeah thats what i was thinking dustrock, some people will be PISSED

    ACTION WHITWELL!

  61. amyfisher Says:

    bleeding the orchid

  62. Briansteez Says:

In Billy’s latest blog didn’t he say “black crosses and white sunshine or is that reversed?” or something like that. Could have been a clue he was giving us. All he said was that each show would be a different set. He never said that the setlist would be static just that each show wouldn’t repeat a song. Maybe songs will float from one night to the other night as long as they aren’t played both nights. Just a thought…

  63. glassOglass Says:

reC: “10 recalled” oh lord.. please no.

  67. Briansteez Says:

I’m thinking that livesmashingpumpkins will sell a million copies of this show if this setlist is true.

  68. glassOglass Says:

i can live blog saturday night from AC @ borgata

  69. jillysp Says:

I will be there too, Glass! You making it up to the NYC shows?

  70. glassOglass Says:

  77. jillysp Says:

I DON’T KNOW CHRIS I THINK I HAVE LOST MY MIND AND ALL TRACK OF TIME WITH THIS ELECTION COVERAGE OMG.

(there’s a solid chance you see *me* melt down tonight. can’t. turn. tv. off.)

  82. MSH Says:

Is anyone really believing Soma, jellybelly and bodies?

    come on now.

  83. Mrs.Zero Says:

Bodies was played. Refer to their Flickr stream.
Un-freaking-believable! So wish I was there!!!!

  84. Not Important Says:

    show is over

now the wait for the setlist……i hope someone filmed some of this

  85. jillysp Says:

I am reserving judgment on Soma / Jellybelly / Bleeding the Orchid etc until we get the full setlist from 34. That’s a pretty ridiculous setlist if it’s true. I’m hoping, but also unwilling to be trolled!

  86. Mrs.Zero Says:

    Jilly - I agree!!!!

  87. jillysp Says:

Looks like Hack is posting photos of merch now?! Good gracious.

  90. uhhhh Says:

Where is the setlist for this show????

  91. Ugh Says:

HACK is a very appropriate username… and jesse jackson is bawling like a baby on CNN.. is 34’s 1980’s cell phone working yet?

  92. chris Says:

Based on the liveblog earlier, 34 got an after-show pass, so he’s probably there right now.

  93. jillysp Says:

    a) NP: Concession Speech
    b) 34 does not have a 1980s cell phone. He lives in Japan and is too cheap to send us texts for like $5.00 apiece on international roaming. Have you seen how many notes he includes?

I know we’re restless; hopefully we’ll have something soon. I’m sure he’s schmoozing backstage. Grrz.

  94. Floppy Nono Says:

somebody really should have been kind enough to offer that man their cell phone.

i mean, it’s for the good of the community RIGHT??

  95. chris Says:

    Community First!

  96. Ugh Says:

    Unlimited free texts FTW.

Anyway, here’s hoping the shows in the US will have people who actually live in the US relaying the setlists

  97. Cherub Angel Says:

Holy fuck! The president lives on the South Side! Hell yeah!

Hmm… no Zero and wasn’t Disarm played last night???

I hate the Pumpkins new ‘official’ website, what a joke… Why not just make a website similar to Pearl Jam’s… Skip the bells and whistles and give the fans what they want, something easy to navigate and RELIABLE!!!!!

  124. jillysp Says:

Regarding the wi-fi delay, 34 followed up via email after the show. Apparently, he tried to get a signal after the show but the band was asking him to stick around for the after-party. He said there weren’t any wi-fi signals he could get ahold of.

According to 34, the scene backstage was giddy with election news and glued to their blackberries:

Jeff read “McCain delivers concession speech” & Jimmy reads a bunch of Dem senate wins & says “Bam! Another Republican gone.” Billy was talking to one of the staff about how he never thought he’d see a black president in his lifetime.

But he did. And we Baracked the vote. [lolz]

    Sorry, I couldn’t help it.

  125. drbenway Says:

Shit… Muzzle would have been nice…

For anyone interested, Corgan said he was very proud of his country tonight for doing the right thing.

couple fixes before bed (for real this time)…

I never actually made it all the way in for the schk- was just inside the side door surrounded by security people while I waited for 1/2 hr for them to tell me to go back & wait outside.. but obviously I could hear a lot better, esp the horn guys, who were on the stairs 1/2 a flight up from there

-I- sneezed, not Billy- I put that there so I’d remember to check & adjust the levels as/if necessary

security said the after-show would be right away

oh- and apparently that 1-2-3-4—6—– bass riff was “probably one of the roadies playing like, their one bass line when we were off the stage.” lol.

  128. jillysp Says:

The first paper setlist is from the stage, here’s a shot of the setlist 34 snagged from the dressing room:
