HU’s Jill at SP.com: “Mashing Pumpkins”

Some of you may have realized that I have a penchant for mash-ups as an art form, especially when it’s accompanied by cheeky photos of blinged-out hip hop artists and angsty-looking indie rock kids. My favorite DJ collaborative by far is the Hood Internet, a Chicago-based duo consisting of Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV). They’ve just released a Chicago-themed disc that they blogged about recently, entitled “The Hood Internet vs Chicago.”
Of course, the Smashing Pumpkins make an appearance on the disc in the track “Smash That There (Yung Berg vs The Smashing Pumpkins)”. Other artists featured include Kanye West, Twista, Walter Meego, Liz Phair, Common and Wilco.

ALSO: If you’re in Chicago, the Hood boys are hosting a mixtape release party at Sonotheque on June 19th. Put on yer dancing shoes and buy tickets here. I’d love to hear how it is!
Culture Bully gave HU the heads-up yesterday about a new Smashing Pumpkins mash-up. We’ve posted about SP-related mash-ups here before, but this new track hails from Boston-based producer Lenlow and Chowdahead singer Katie Enlow.
Lenlow’s work is pretty trippy and I think best summed up by the current default MySpace tune: JLo vs KCo vs SWo. … Say that one out loud three times fast (without laughing). I can honestly say I’ve never heard Nirvana like this before.
The Pumpkins are included in a Katie Enlow vs. The Beatles vs. Chemical Brothers vs. Smashing Pumpkins vs. John Mayer vs. The Strokes match-up. And I’m going to leave it up to you to decide who takes the title in this massive mash. I’m giving Mayer the edge - I think he has the wingspan advantage. Check it out below.

Some of you may be familiar with popular mash-up artists like Girl Talk (who sampled the Pumpkins on his album, Night Ripper). Personally, I’m a huge fan of the Chicago outfit The Hood Internet, which does fantastic mash-ups of indie rock and glitzy hip hop [listen to a real gem here]. Their Photoshopped faux album art just *kills* me.
The latest use of the Smashing Pumpkins in a mash-up comes from Altered Anthems in the form of a TLC-TSP track entitled “Unpretty Today.” Either you love it or you hate it, but you have to admit it’s creative!
